Huperzine A

Do you ever have those inconvenient memory lapses? Whether it’s not being able to remember the name of your first grade teacher or being unable to find where you parked your car in a parking lot, we all experience memory lapses from time to time. But for some people, memory loss is a serious problem. They could be suffering from a vitamin deficiency, stress or an underlying medical condition. By now we all know that Alzheimer’s Disease is characterized at first by memory loss, and older people suffering from dementia (which is different from Alzheimer’s Disease, though both conditions are often confused) are also afflicted with a poor memory. Even if you know that you do not have a medical condition, a poor memory can be a real nuisance. It can keep you from remembering appointments or even important events (such as the fact that the oven is on!) and severely hamper your quality of life.

Luckily for those afflicted with memory loss, scientists have been working on this problem and have identified several vitamins, minerals and plants that assist with the recovery of memory in those who have been experiencing memory loss. One such discovery is the alkaloid compound huperzine A. Huperzine A is found in nature. To be precise, it is found in plants. In fact, herbalists and medicine lore keepers in China have long since used the plants that contain huperzine A as a medical treatment from everything to swelling, to fever to disorders of the blood. Even today scientists and medical researchers in China are testing huperzine A. Aside from finding that this plant compound helps with memory loss, it has also been found to treat Alzheimer’s disease and better yet, even help enhance the memory of healthy people who do not complain of memory loss!

Here in the United States, you can visit your local grocery store, drug store or nutrition store and buy huperzine A in dietary supplement form. Huperzine A is sold in the U.S. specifically as a stimulant to memory. But why does huperzine A help people who are complaining of memory loss or lapses in memory? Scientists think that huperzine A is effective in helping the brain counteract the effects of neurodegeneration. Memory loss, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia all occur due to neurodegeneration. If scientists can fully harness the powers of huperzine A, they very well may be able to make a more effective medicine with which to treat older people who have been afflicted with Alzheimer’s Disease and other disorders commonly associated with the elderly.

So why use huperzine A to treat your memory loss and not some other memory loss product? For one, some studies – including the previously mentioned clinical trials conducted in China – have show that huperzine A may have fewer side effects than similar drugs. Further, huperzine A may prove to be an important drug to treat more than just memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease. Some scientists are studying huperzine a’s efficacy when it comes to treating epilepsy. Many epileptics, even in this day and age, have trouble finding the proper combination of medicines to manage their conditions. As epilepsy is often characterized by dangerous seizures, any advances in the treatment of epilepsy would be quite welcomed by sufferers.

If you or someone you love is experiencing memory loss, huperzine a may be a viable dietary supplement to help correct the problem. Of course, to be on the safe side, visit your primary care physician before starting a regiment of huperzine A. He or she can examine your symptoms and help you determine an appropriate course of action.
